Character Information
Name: Kaden
Canon: Fire Emblem Fates (Revelations)
Canon Point: Post-game, no S-rank
Age: 19. Kitsune age differently than humans, so it's assumed he's old enough to take leadership of his village and still be considered "youthful".
History: Link to the Wiki, which includes info on all three routes.

Personality:

What does the Kaden say? Well, to summarize his character in Fire Emblem: Fates, he introduces himself three different ways in the three different paths of the game:

"I'm here to return a favor for someone. Anytime someone's nice to me, I have to be nice in return."

"Keehee, not bad, eh? It really was nice to meet you. I wish we could have met elsewhere. I really loathe violence, but since you stepped into our territory... Sorry, but you humans have to die now."

"I'm Kaden! As you can see, I'm from the most beautiful race in the world, kitsune! I can transform into a giant fox if I use a beaststone!"

From these statements, which are part of his pre-battle opening scripts from the stages where he makes his first appearance, Kaden's personality can be boiled down to three broad statements: he is vain, he can be deceptive, and he believes in paying back kind gestures. All of these are further impacted by his acting as the current chief of the Kitsune race and their village is on the Hoshidan side of the continent. His actions are directed by strong morals and sometimes, by a weakness brought on by his desire for attention and his love for being treated like a treasure. While Kaden will be taken from Revelations, his characterization in the other two routes are still part of why he does what he does. His interactions with his allies and friends also are vital to his character, as the Fire Emblem series and their support system does give pairs of units additional beneficial stats as a reward to developing a character's bond. However, these conversations are also just to reinforce what the player learns about him at his start and personalize them to the unit he is talking with.

In Birthright, the Hoshidan army encounters Kaden as he's trying to figure out how to solve a "human" problem for a girl named Layla, who was asked to perform for King Garon but as her elderly mother is sick, feels that she must take care of her rather than perform the Hoshidan army's enemy. As the Avatar and Azura figure out a way to get them into a position where they can distract the enemy soldiers and attack him, Kaden figures out that his favor system is a little confusing: "Yay! I think Layla and I are even. But...now I owe you guys. Wow! I've really got myself in a pickle with this whole favor thing... Do you think I could tag along with you humans until I figure out how to repay you?" He is able to convince the Hoshidan forces that he is an able fighter, can turn into a "big, scary fox" that is "super fierce" thanks to his Beaststone, and ends up joining them from that point on.

This situation is very important. First, he doesn't introduce himself as the leader of the Kitsune. He doesn't feel the need to make that an important distinction. Someone who describes himself with having "sweet fox vision" certainly could make himself seem very important, thus not requiring to convince the Avatar, but he chooses to show how useful he could be while repaying his new debt. Second, Kaden is completely all-in on making sure he is able to return his favors. He is willing to sacrifice his life to make sure that the balance of favors is eventually even. He doesn't second guess and goes as far as to say that war sounds "crazy and exciting". And third, he notes that "kitsune never get lost" until he is done owing people favors. In a way, this could be interpreted in that he is never lost when trying to do the right thing. This is partially confirmed by the Azura's response of "let me put it another way".

Kaden basically allows a stranger who didn't even know about the existence of Kitsune in Hoshido to direct them in war. It would therefore make sense he would show the same kindness, the same respect, to those he may not know in other worlds. In a setting like Aefenglom, it's perfectly reasonable another person may try to take advantage of that. Whether Kaden is able to successfully see through possible manipulation is one thing, but just because he is willing to owe favor after favor, doing what he considers 'good' or not, is questionable when focusing on the second of the three campaigns of Fates.

The Avatar does not get much time with the Conquest-version of Kaden. In fact, he appears as the Nohrian army is trying to take a path through the mountains that runs through the Kitsune Hamlet. As soon as they do, Azura exclaims "A kitsune! Gods, no..." which is definitely not a good thing. In fact, in this timeline, the Avatar recognizes that the potential danger a Kitsune brings: "I'm happy to see kitsune are friendlier than expected. We've heard all kinds of crazy rumors about people losing their lives to your kind... But it seems all that is just one big misunderstanding." After this, Azura realizes that their forces are surrounded by many Kitsune warriors, ready to fight. Even though Kaden says that Nohrian humans have always helped him find his way back home after getting lost and are "expert fur brushers", he knows he must make a decision to keep his clan safe though he hates fighting.

Unfortunately, Kaden's fate is that he is killed and that the Kitsune are wiped out. Regardless of how much he feels that the Nohrian army may not present a threat, those who enter the village willingly are ones who may want to poach them for their fur. He must protect everyone as the village chief. In this sole interaction throughout the Conquest path, Kaden does reveal his importance as it is directly in line with the needs of others and not just his own. Furthermore, he does imply he continues to do favors for humans and gets lost due to it. Only this time, he is home and is not lost this time. Kaden shows compassion in a way, saying that he will "make this up to you" to the Avatar if they meet in the afterlife. Alternatively, Kaden is also deceptive. He is able to keep the Nohrian army's attention while allowing his brethren to close in. He also explains the difference between the humans that help him outside of the village and those who look for it, regardless of their intention. This action, seen as necessary, does show that he is willing to do what must be done--- just like his favors. He makes a decision and does not go back on it. Deception or otherwise, his own intentions are one hundred percent correct to him, even if it ends in death.

Kaden does not want to fight. This is a true statement, though he knows he is a powerful Kitsune among others. Only when his own people have the potential to be in danger, does he take violence seriously. In a situation of meeting new friends and/or enemies, in an environment he is not familiar with, he will aggressively pursue non-aggressive means of action. He will try to use his appearance to dissuade fighting--- in both the Birthright and Conquest paths, he makes reference of how he looks. From a fluffy tail that receives brushing to being able to turn into a sweet fox, Kaden will not fight unless he is forced to OR owes a debt.

Finally, the Revelations path does nothing more than reinforce the previous personality quirks displayed by Kaden. Both he and another shapeshifter, Keaton, are visiting a town together. Both Keaton and Kaden are intrigued by the combined Hoshidan and Nohrian armies and decide to join them in trying to end the war against an invisible enemy that had been trying to destroy the place they are found at. Here, Kaden's introduction implies the player is familiar with him: he says that they (meaning he and Keaton) need to repay the army and they need to repay the town they're in as they were very welcome to the shapeshifting duo. He also calls his race "the most beautiful".

The last thing that needs to be brought up are the conversations Kaden can have with his comrades and friends, depending on how much time he spends with them on the battlefield. Two specific support conversations stick out beyond the things displayed in his opening sequences in the game: Keaton's and Felicia's.

Kaden is lured into an adventure to find "majestic" and "beautiful" creatures in the forest after commenting on the quality of Keaton's tail, being rugged and full of junk. After getting lost and sharing some bread, they are finally able to find the spot that Keaton had initially discovered. Ultimately, Kaden is immediately shocked and frightened by the creatures--- spiders, of various colors. Even though he's scared of them, he does note that he wants them to be happy. Just not near him. Inevitably, this strengthens the two shapeshifter's bonds through a small and silly journey.

Another important conversation is one that Kaden has with the maid, Felicia. Kaden finds an injured kitten and Felicia notices that he seems to be distracted because he isn't sure how to handle it. He ends up giving the kitten to her to take care of, but becomes jealous that the kitten gets more attention than he does, even though he takes good care of himself. In the end, the kitten must be given away to someone who isn't involved in the war, and Kaden finds himself wanting more and more praise from Felicia even after he admits his jealousy.

To sum it all up, Kaden will always try to perform favors for those who do them for him. He believes strongly in paying it back and possibly, paying it forward. He views himself as being very beautiful, to the point where he likes it when others brush his fur, and due to this feels that he has a good sense of what beauty really is. As one who can turn into a fox, he is a powerful and fast fighter as long as he has his Beaststone. Finally, he will try to avoid combat, but will do so if it means protecting close friends and family.

Abilities & Skills:

Kaden is a Shapeshifter, however his stone will be coming into the game as being broken and leaving him unable to shift as he normally would.

The most notable passive ability that Kaden has in the game is called "Reciprocity", based on his desire and enjoyment of paying back those who have done favors for him. It heals the one who healed him for half of the amount. While this may not have any direct applications in the game, it should be recognized as it is specific to him only.

The other two, "Beastbane" and "Evenhanded" may not be needed as they deal with battle mechanics. Special note regarding "Evenhanded" is that Keaton, the Nohrian Wolfskin, has "Odd Shaped" which is the opposite of the Kitsune passive ability.

When Kaden is holding his Beaststone, which is a red orb made of some kind of lightweight, opaque material, he is able to transform into a majestic multiple-tailed fox. He becomes much more agile, but only slightly stronger. He is also 100% more pet-able.

Inventory/Companions: The clothes on his back, two well-used wooden brushes, and one cracked Beaststone.

Choice: Witch
Reason: Because Kaden doesn't normally have magic in Fire Emblem and having a Beaststone doesn't count! That, and I think he'd love to use it selfishly and have it backfire on occasion.

Sample: TDM top-level and one thread.
